Traditional mortars are eminently workable, effectively porous, economic in use and appropriately durable. Used in buildings for thousands of years, these materials are ideal for repair and conservation work. Unlike cement or modern hydraulic lime, their routine use would make a significant contribution in the struggle against climate change. However, despite the 1975 'lime revival' there remains a deficit in research into the most-used traditional mortars. This book seeks to redress the balance. Drawing upon historic literature, material science and industry case studies, topics covered include: a historical overview of traditional mortars; slaking and mixing hot mixed lime mortars; the essentials of pozzolans, aggregates and lime tempering; plasters, lime washes and sheltercoats, and finally, the revival of interest in the use of like-for-like and compatible mortars.

"Framed by evocative inscriptions, tumultuous historical events, and the ambiguities of Christian death, Romanesque tomb effigies were the first large-scale figural monuments for the departed in European art. In this book, Shirin Fozi explores these provocative markers of life and death, establishing early tomb figures as a coherent genre that hinged upon histories of failure and frustrated ambition. In sharp contrast to later recumbent funerary figures, none of the known European tomb effigies made before circa 1180 were commissioned by the people they represented, and all of the identifiable examples of these tombs were dedicated to individuals whose legacies were fraught rather than triumphant. Fozi draws on this evidence to argue that Romanesque effigies were created to address social rather than individual anxieties: they compensated for defeat by converting local losses into an expectation of eternal victory, comforting the embarrassed heirs of those whose histories were marked by misfortune and offering compensation for the disappointments of the world. Featuring numerous examples and engaging the visual, historical, and theological contexts that inform them, this groundbreaking work adds a fresh dimension to the study of monumental sculpture and the idea of the individual in the northern European Middle Ages. It will appeal to scholars of art history and medieval studies."

"Professor of Law at Catholic University Roger C. Hartley provides a thorough overview of the issue of Confederate monuments and their problematic presence on the American landscape. He examines and dissects competing claims regarding the removal of these monuments from public spaces ... mov[ing] readers through various debates on the subject ...with the compelling logic of a legal scholar ... methodically build[ing] the case that 'Confederate monuments harm contemporary American society by perpetuating antiblack racial stereotyping and systemic racism.' This harm, he continues, 'overrides even good faith claims to leave Confederate monuments undisturbed in order to preserve Southern heritage.' In the course of building this case for material harm, Hartley nonetheless offers his own good faith discussions of competing arguments for retaining Confederate monuments in situ. While these include 'heritage' claims, they also include those sometimes heard from historians and historic preservationists regarding the significance of monuments as teaching tools and the dangers of 'sanitizing' the historical landscape. While Hartley's argument ultimately makes a compelling case for removal/relocation as the optimal choice, he does not dismiss the alternative arguments. Instead, he deconstructs each and examines them for potential flaws in a way that will force readers to examine their own beliefs"--
